About
Wessex Ecology is an independent ecological consultancy providing planning-focused surveys, reports and on-site support across the Wessex region and Greater London.
We help homeowners, architects, planning consultants, developers and landowners meet their ecological obligations in a clear, proportionate and practical way – without unnecessary delay or complexity.
Our aim is simple: to give you clear, pragmatic advice that keeps your project moving.
Quotes are returned within 24 hours on working days, and we are always happy to talk through your plans and the likely requirements.
Our story
Wessex Ecology was founded in 2017 as Daniel Ahern Ecology, by Dan Ahern following more than twenty years working as a professional ecologist across the UK and Ireland.
Since then, we have delivered over 550 ecological projects, supporting planning applications of all sizes — from small householder extensions to complex, multi-phase developments.
As the business grew, so did the scale and geographic spread of our work, along with the team supporting it. What began as a sole consultancy developed into a collaborative practice delivering ecology, arboriculture, biodiversity net gain and mitigation services across the wider region.
In 2026, the business became Wessex Ecology - a name that better reflects:
the regional scope of our work
the breadth of expertise within the team
and our long-term commitment to the landscapes we work in
What did not change was our approach: clear, practical ecological advice, delivered by experienced people who care about quality, service and outcomes.
-
We understand what planning officers and statutory consultees expect to see. Our reports are structured to answer their questions clearly and efficiently.
-
We recommend only what is genuinely required for your project, not unnecessary surveys or over-complicated solutions.
-
We work across the Wessex region and Greater London, with deep familiarity of local planning policies, landscape character and designated sites.
-
We explain what is needed, why it is needed and what happens next, in plain English, with prompt responses throughout.
-
All work is delivered or overseen by licensed ecologists, supported by experienced arboriculturists and habitat specialists.
-
Fast quotes, realistic timescales and dependable delivery you can plan around.
